If you have a current or graduated PVLL youth player that is interested in becoming a youth umpire (12-year player or older) or announcer (13-year-old and in 7th grade or older) this PVLL season, this email is for you! Please review carefully…..
As many of you are aware, for many years PVLL has organized a youth umpire and announcer program intended to increase participant’s knowledge of the rules of the game, build character and foster continued youth involvement. The ultimate goal of this program is to give youth an opportunity to learn, succeed and be rewarded in a challenging and safe environment.
Youth umpires work with Pro umpires to staff field positions at PVLL season games (all behind the plate umpiring is conducted by Pro Umpires). Through this unique program, youth umpires obtain specific training, follow clearly defined procedures and protocols, and have an opportunity to show responsibility through the program. Being a youth umpire is a BIG responsibility - but a valuable one! If your youth is interested in being a youth umpire, please note the following:
The Palos Verdes Little League (PVLL) is unique in our area in that we have youth announcers for each of our main field (Valmonte) games. As a participant in the program, you are responsible for your actions at the field - as an announcer you will be representing PVLL with what you say and do. That is a BIG responsibility! We want you to both be aware of this responsibility as well as PVLL’s appreciation for your having accepted it.
If you are interested in being a Youth Announcer you must meet the following requirements:
If you meet the above requirements, please review and complete/submit the attached Youth Announcer agreement prior to Sunday, February 3rd (attached below). You may scan/email it to me OR send it hard copy, but please make all effort to turn in your completed agreement prior to February 3rd. Both parents and youth should read the agreement fully to understand the program and responsibilities prior to signing. This is their first “job” within the program.
All youth announcers MUST attend PVLL Youth Announcer training each year before they can announce a game. In addition, new youth announcers are asked to “shadow” an experienced announcer prior to taking their first job as an announcer to learn “field” experience (to be scheduled by the announcer coordinator).
This year opening day will be held on Saturday, February 24th. IF you are an experienced youth announcer (8th grade or older) and would like to announce one of the Opening Day games, please email me DIRECTLY as I will be scheduling that day ahead of time.
In addition to this email, all information pertaining to either the youth umpire or announcer positions can be found on the PVLL website under “Operations”. That said, should you have any questions about either of the Youth Umpire or Youth Announcer programs, please contact me. I look forward to seeing you and/or your youth at the upcoming training events!
